1870 An Examination of the Utilitarian Philosophy
What Our Customers Say...
Description
First Edition, Publishers' Original Binding, Uncommon
The uncommon first edition of this work.
The work of English moral philosopher and Anglican clergyman John Grote. Posthumously published, the work was edited and prepared for publication by the author's nephew in law, Joseph Bickersteth Mayor.
Described by Schneewind as 'probably the most meticulous philosophical scrutiny' of John Stuart Mill's philosophy of utilitarianism.
Grote offers a counter to Mill's concepts of happiness and pleasure, and their relation to morality.
Grote advocates for a different view of happiness, and contends that questions of morality and justice should be based upon lived realities, rather than more abstract concepts and principles.
