All 12 issues of the The Children's Prize from 1869, bound into one volume with a coloured frontispiece and 85 illustrations. Founded by John Erskine Clarke in 1863, The Children's Prize was a monthly magazine containing serialised stories, poetry, and illustrations for children. Clergyman Clarke issued the first ever parish magazine, and went on to produce a weekly paper for older children called the Chatterbox. Ink inscription to front endpaper reads, 'Edward. A New Year's gift from Papa & Mamma'. Dated January 1870.
Condition
In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, generally sound. Lightly rubbed to the boards and spine, with a tear in the joint at the front board. Bumped to the head and tail of the spine with some marginal loss to the tail. Slightly bent at the extremities. Front endpaper, frontispiece, and title page present but disbound due to front hinge failure. Back hinge starting but firm. Some light foxing to fore edge of the text block. Internally, generally firmly bound. Aside from some marks to the rear pastedown, pages are bright and clean with the occasional spot.
