Description

First Edition, Rebound, Very Scarce

Macmillan's Magazine, Vol. XX, No. 119, September 1869.

The first article in this issue is by American abolitionist Harriet Beecher Stowe, best known for her novel 'Uncle Tom's Cabin'. The article is titled 'The True Story of Lady Byron's Life', and discusses the sufferings of Lord Byron's wife at his hands.

The year following this article, Stowe published the work 'Lady Byron Vindicated', based upon conversations the two had had during their friendship. In the work, Lady Byron revealed her fears about alleged incest between Lord Byron and his half-sister.

Other articles in this issue include 'Lady Duff-Gordon and Her Works' by Mrs. Norton, 'The Goose Girl' by E. Keary, and 'The Crisis in New Zealand' by Frederick Napier.

Rebound in cloth, with endpapers renewed, but with the publisher's original front and rear wrap bound in.

With twenty pages of advertisements to the start of the work, and ten pages of advertisements to the rear.

With the stamp of Nottingham Public Libraries to the front wrap, with further library stamps throughout.

A Victorian era magazine which features Harriet Beecher Stowe's very scarce article on the relationship between Lord Byron and his wife, shortly preceding her book on the same subject.
