In the original French. The complete four volume first edition of Hugo's work. Without edition statements, and with volumes I and II printed by L. Poupart-Davyl, and volumes III and IV by Ch. Lahure, as called for.
In full vellum signed bindings by Riviere.
Hugo's novel takes place in England between 1690 and the early eighteenth century reign of Queen Anne. It depicts England's royalty and aristocracy as cruel and power-hungry, drawing a parallel with the France of Louis-Philippe and the Regence.
With a bookplate to each front pastedown, and with the stamp of the Rugby School Modern Languages Library to a front blank of each volume, and to the half titles of volumes II-IV.
Retaining the original half titles.
A beautiful first edition from the French novelist, best remembered for his novels 'The Hunchback of Notre-Dame' and 'Les Misérables'.
Condition
In full vellum signed bindings. Externally, exceptionally bright. Light rubbing to volume number spine labels of volumes I and III, with a touch of rubbing to the gilt of the back strip heads and tails. Bookplates to front pastedowns. Library stamps to front blanks, and the half titles of volumes II-IV. Internally, firmly bound. Pages exceptionally clean and bright.
