This volume is a first edition.

This book serves as Britain's first cocktail book, offering a comprehensive collection of “cups” and other compounded drink recipes alongside notable discussions on beverages. This is a work that helped to popularise the mixing of drinks.

This work is is also cited as progressing gin away from Hogarth's Gin Lane and towards respectability.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, boards and spine faded and soiled with the odd slight damp stain, more so to lower perimeters. The odd slight handling mark. slight rubbing and bumping to extremities resulting in one or two small closed tears at extremities of joints. Slight offsetting with the odd spot and handling to endpapers. Hinges cracked, with binding material slightly exposed. Rear hinge slightly loose, but holding. Previous owner's inscription to front free endpaper. Internally, generally firmly bound. Hinges slightly strained. Rear endpaper partially disbound. Pages generally bright and clean, if slightly age toned. The odd spot and handling mark, heavier to first and last few leaves. Previous owner's inscription to title page from 1870.
