Description

First Edition, Folding Plates, Illustrated, Leather Binding, Very Scarce

A very scarce first edition.

Illustrated with fifty-six plates, many of which are folding, and a further 103 vignette illustrations. Collated, complete.

This illustrated engineering text discusses marine propulsion technology during the crucial transition to screw propellers in naval and commercial shipping, discussing propeller design, efficiency calculations, construction techniques, and installation methods.

The editor appealed to leading Marine Engineers for articles on the subject, with articles including Maudslay Sons and Field on the Feathering Screw Propeller, John Penn on Lignum-vitae Bearings and Capt. T. E. Symonds on the Twin Screw System, together with several articles by Burgh himself.

With the bookplate of the Royal Naval College library to the front pastedown, and their stamp throughout the work.

A fascinating work in understanding and the practical engineering challenges of implementing screw propulsion systems as replaced traditional paddle wheels.
