A scarce first edition.
Inscribed to the title page head 'With the Director General's Compliment's'. Sir Alexander Armstrong was appointed Director General of the Medical Department of the Royal Navy in 1866, and he remained in post until 1880. He was the senior medical officer responsible for naval health and hygiene.
Ordered by the House of Commons to be printed 22 April 1869.
A dense and extensive report on Navy health in the late nineteenth century
With a lengthy appendix to the rear, which incorporates nineteen folding tables and maps, and thirty-five charts offering medical statistics, printed in black and red ink.
The work includes information on mortality, illness, analysis of disease type, and suggestions of health measures to be taken.
Condition
In a half calf binding, with marbled paper covered board. Front board detached but present. Lacking rear board. Significant losses of calf to back strip head and tail. Internally, firmly bound. Signed to title page head. Pages clean and bright, with the odd handling mark.
