A magnificent four volume set of Cassell's Book of Birds, from the text of German zoologist Dr. Alfred Brehm. Compiled and written by English surgeon and zoologist Thomas Rymer Jones. Published by Cassell, Petter and Galpin between 1869 and 1873. Bound in two books, volumes I and II, and volumes III and IV. A complete set.

In half calf, half morocco. Contains all forty beautiful colour plates, ten in each volume, and numerous engraved in-text illustrations. Collated complete.

An informative and insightful guide into the various birds that populate our planet, from ducks to toucans, and pigeons to vultures. Having co-authored the popular Brehm's Animal Life, Brehm, along with Jones, know how to strike a perfect balance between detail and charm that is sure to inspire the reader into ornithology.

Condition

In half calf, half morocco. Externally, very smart, with minimal marks. Slight rubbing to the calf spine and extremities, heavier to volumes III and IV. Minor fading to the extremities of the cloth boards, heavier to volumes III-IV. Small signs of shelf wear. End papers are generally clean, with slight spotting to volumes I and II. Slight wear to hinge of front end papers of volumes I and II. Internally, firmly bound, with very slight wear to hinge between leaves pp.32-33 of volume II. Pages are generally bright and clean, with the odd spot to the extremities of the occasional leaf. Spotting heavier to first and last leaves of each book.
