1868 Review of the Work of Mr John Stuart Mill, Entitled, 'Examination of Sir William Hamilton's Philosophy'
What Our Customers Say...
Description
First Edition, Publishers' Original Binding, Very Scarce
A very scarce first edition.
The work of English political radical and classical historian George Grote, who is now best known for his major work, 'History of Greece'. He was a supporter of utilitarianism, and of many of John Stuart Mill's views.
Grote offers an analysis of John Stuart Mill's response to Sir William Hamilton’s philosophy, supporting Mill's critiques and expanding on them.
Mill had critiqued Hamilton for inconsistencies in his views on perception, consciousness, and the limits of human knowledge. Grote reinforces these arguments, and questions Hamilton’s defence of innate knowledge and 'intuitionism'.
With the bookplate of William Michael Collett to the front pastedown.
This work first appeared in the January 1, 1866 issue of the 'Westminster Review'.
