The first edition of this descriptive guide book of Clifton and its neighbouring areas (excluding Bristol). By John Taylor. A scarce copy only held by the British Library on Copac. With chapters on Glastonbury, Brislington, Knole House, Westbury, and more. From the library at Julian Park, Hertfordshire, belonging to Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie. Audrey was the youngest daughter of an Anglo-American lumber and steel millionaire, sister to Edward James, a key figure in the Surrealist movement, and the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII.
A charming guide illustrated with numerous original photographs depicting the areas, these are pasted within red line borders. The number of photographs seen in various copies varies, Hyett & Bazeley's Manual of Gloucestershire Literature calls for eighteen photographs (p. 256,) while the copy held at the British Library counts thirty-four.
The present copy is illustrated with twenty-five original photographs and two full page plates in black and white.
She was an English socialite known for her beauty and for charming various wealthy men, she was included in The Book of Beauty by Cecil Beaton. A patron of the arts, she assisted Viscount Carlow financially in the publication of limited editions of numerous works by leading literary figures such as T E Lawrence, James Joyce, Wyndham Lewis, and others. A hedonistic pursuer, she was recognised as one of the 'Bright Young Things'.
Condition
In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally rather worn with some shelf wear and rubbing tot he spine and extremities, some chipping and minor loss to the spine. The front board has detached. With Harold E Matthews' small bookplate tot he front pastedown. Previous ownership signature to the front blank page, dated 1870. Internally, firmly bound. With a minor faint scattered spotting, particularly to the first and last few leaves and to the leaves of plates, although, generally, the pages are very clean throughout. Illustrated with twenty-five original photographs and two full page plates in black and white.
