This is a collection of critical and historical essays published by Lord Macaulay through the Edinburgh Review. These articles were originally put together into one volume in 1843. They have been praised for their readability, but criticised for their 'inflexible attachments to the Whig school of history'.
Contents include essays on figures such as 'Milton', 'Machiavelli', 'Moore's Life of Lord Byron', as well as 'Lord Clive', 'Leigh Hunt', and 'Warren Hastings'.
Thomas Babington Macaulay (1800-1859) was a British historian and Whig politician. He served as the Secretary of War from 1839 to 1841, and was primarily responsible for the introduction of Western institutional education to India.

Condition
Prize binding, bound in full-calf for Harrow School. Externally, very smart. Bright gilt illustration on boards as well as spine. A few marks to boards, with one particularly to the rear board. Very light fading to spine and top edge of front board. Front hinge is starting but remains firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean throughout. The odd spot, particularly to the first few pages of text.
