Handsomely bound across two half calf volumes, with morocco spine labels and marbled endpapers.
The Art Journal was regarded as one of the most important British 19th-century fine arts magazines, founded in 1839 by Hodgson & Graves under the name The Art Union. Comprising a wide array of essays on influential artists, movements and institutions.
Richly illustrated throughout with engravings from the work of artists including Charles Robert Leslie, Abraham Solomon, Alexander Hohenlohe Burr and George Smith.
With twenty-six steel engraved plates and many in-text illustrations. Collated, plates to Vol VI of the Journal are complete. Lacking the preliminaries of the Universal Exhibition illustrated catalogue (pages i-xii), including the engraved title page. The present copy has been bound to start at the engraved dedication page.
Condition
Smartly bound in half calf, with morocco spine labels and marbled endpapers. Externally, very smart, with mild rubbing to the extremities and marks to the leather. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean, with occasional light spotting to the blank borders of the plates.
