1867 Proceedings in Reference to the Preservation of the Bunhill Fields Burial Ground.
What Our Customers Say...
Description
First Edition, Original Binding, Publishers' Original Binding
The first edition in the publisher's original cloth binding with the London coat of arms stamped in gilt to the front board.
The Preservation Committee's efforts were successful and the Bunhill Fields cemetery site is now a valued public space in Islington with the gravestones still standing. The preservation initiative was triggered by the Corporation of London's 16th century lease due to expire the following year with reversion to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners.
The burial ground had long been the place of internment for nonconformists and radicals who refused burial by the Anglican church (including John Bunyan, Daniel Defoe, and William Blake).
With a letter pertaining to the proceedings loosely inserted.
