A scholarly exploration of the various artistic representations and cultural significances of the Virgin Mary.

The fourth volume from the author's most successful work, a six-volume series titled 'Sacred and Legendary Art'. 

In the original cloth binding, with a decorative gilt stamp to the front board.

Illustrated with a frontispiece and twenty-six plates of etchings, and many in-text wood engravings. Collated, complete. 

This volume was succeeded by the final two ('The History of Our Lord in Art'), which were completed for publishing posthumously by Mrs. Jameson's friend Lady Eastlake. 

Jameson was best known for writing on subjects such as art and literary criticism, philosophy, travel writing, and feminism. 



Condition

In the original cloth binding. Externally, smart, with rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Fading to the spine. Front hinge is tender and rear hinge is starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with occasional spots.
