First Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding
Originally published in 'Idylls of the King' (1859-85). This is the first separate edition, published in large folio and featuring nine striking full page plates by celebrated artist Gustave Dore, and concerned with Elaine ('Lancelot and Elaine'). Collated, complete. With half title.
Based upon the story of Elaine of Astolat, lady from the castle of Astolat who dies of her unrequited love for Sir Lancelot in Arthurian legend.
Written by Alfred, Lord Tennyson, one of the leading English poets in the nineteenth century, Poet Laureate during much of Queen Victoria's reign.
Condition
In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally bumped to head and tail of spine and extremities, light loss to rear board. Front hinge slightly strained. Binding generally firm. Light spotting scattered to leaves, particularly to external margins.
