Description

First Edition, Folding Maps, Original Binding, Publishers' Original Binding, Very Scarce

One volume of a two volume set, being volume II only. First edition. A detailed history of the 52nd Light Infantry during and after the Battle of Waterloo, marking the end of the Napoleonic Wars. Being the regiment of Field Marshal John Colborne, 1st Baron Seaton, a British Army officer and colonial governor. This volume provides a history from their journey from St. Andrew's to England in 1842, up until the 52nd Indian Mutiny in 1857, with various appendixes. An important piece of military history, at the Battle of Waterloo, Colborne led the 52nd Regiment to make a decisive intervention when the French Imperial Guard attacked Wellington's weakened centre. As soon as General Sir Frederick Adam saw this action, he sent in extra troops to support him allowing Colborne and his men to drive forward towards La Haye Sainte, while Wellington rode back to the main line to order the general advance. Written by William Leeke, a British Army officer and clergyman, known for his published reminiscences of the Waterloo Campaign, which form a primary source for many modern histories of the campaign.
