A very scarce first edition.

Illustrated with nine folding tables, and ten folding plates and charts, seven of which are in partial colour.

Collated, complete.

Williams was a civil engineer known for his contributions to railway engineering. In this volume, he focuses on the upkeep and replacement of railway tracks, referred to as 'permanent way' in railway terminology.

Williams discusses aspects of railway maintenance including the deterioration of track materials, track renewal strategies and ballast maintenance. He makes effort to consider financial aspects of railway maintenance when discussing materials and techniques.

Rebound in morocco, with endpapers renewed.

This volume was edited by James Forest, the Secretary of the Institution of Civil Engineers.

An exceptionally scarce first edition from Price-Williams, who acted as consulting engineer for the proposed Metropolitan Outer Circle Railway, was Chief Engineer for the Royal Commission on Irish Railways, and aided with making plans for railways both in Great Britain and the Colonies.

Condition

Rebound in full morocco, with endpapers renewed. Externally, fine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages a touch age toned to perimeters, but generally clean and bright.
