First Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding

A first edition thus, being the first illustrated edition.

Illustrated with twenty-five vignette woodcuts by Arthur Hughes. This was his first major book commission. Collated, complete.

This poem concerns the principle in law that after being missing for a certain number of years, a person could be declared dead for purposes of inheritance and remarriage. 

With a sixteen page publisher's catalogue to the rear, dated December 1865.

First published in 1864, when Tennyson was Poet Laureate.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding. Fading to gilt of front board, with small ink spot to centre of front board. Bumping to back strip head and tail, with light tide mark towards tail of back strip. Mark towards head of front joint. Front hinge strained, but firmly held. Internally, firmly bound. Small closed tears to fore edge of title page, with pages otherwise clean and bright.
