The fourth, revised and extended edition of Henry Hart Milman's comprehensive The History of the Jews, published by John Murray, 1866. 

In the publisher's original cloth, rebacked with spines laid down to volumes 2 and 3. Includes an original general list of works from the publisher at the end of volume 3.

Originally a poet and dramatist, Milman later became known as one of the best ecclesiastical historians of his time. The History of the Jews was his first contribution to ecclesiastical historiography, offering an insightful narrative account of Jewish history.

Volume 1 focuses on their foundations, delving into the stories of figures such as Abraham and King Saul. Volume 2 focuses on their struggles as a people in the Roman Empire, including the famous siege of Jerusalem. Volume 3 focuses on their medieval history, including their expulsions from England and Spain, as well as early modern history under European kings like Frederick the Great and Louis XIV.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth boards. Externally, smart. Slight bumping to upper and lower extremities of boards. Volume 1, slight fading to front board, near the spine, with a small bump to top edge of front board. Rebacked spines laid down to volumes 2 and 3, with fading. Fading to back board of volume 3, near spine. The odd spot to end papers. Slight handling marks. Internally, generally firmly bound. Binding slightly tender on leaf of p.227 of volume 1. Small tears to the first four leaves of volume 1. Pages are bright and generally clean, with the odd spot to the extremities. Most pronounced spotting to final leaves. The occasional handling mark.
