What Our Customers Say...

Description

First Edition, Illustrated, Leather Binding

First edition, in full calf binding of Lives of Boulton and Watt. Principally from the Original Soho MSS. Comprising Also A History of the Invention and Introduction of the Steam-Engine by Samuel Smiles.

This book is intended to conclude Smiles' five volume Lives of Engineers (1862) and was inspired by the success of Life of George Stephenson (1857). Smiles was a British author and government reformer who wrote many biographies of successful inspiring men of the Victorian age whose success stories aligned with his libertarian beliefs.

Includes monochrome plates and illustrations throughout the text.

Undated ink inscription from prior owner to the half title.

Condition

In full calf binding. Externally, smart. There is some bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities, resulting in some wear. The spine is slightly worn and the authorship label is nearly lost. The front hinge is starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with the exception of some occasional spotting. Includes prior owner's undated ink inscription to the half title.
