Leather Binding

Two volumes in one. 'With life, critical dissertation, and explanatory notes, by the Rev. George Gilfillan'. With a bookbinder's stamp for S. Hogg to the front free endpaper and a bookseller's label for R. J. Bush to the rear pastedown. William Cowper (26 November 1731 – 25 April 1800) was an English poet and hymnodist. One of the most popular poets of his time, Cowper changed the direction of eighteenth-century nature poetry by writing about everyday life and scenes of the English countryside. Coleridge called him 'the best modern poet'.

Condition

In a full calf binding. Externally, excellent with just minor shelfwear only. Fading to the spine. Internally, generally firmly bound although slightly strained in places. Some scattered light foxing. Copperplate ink inscription to first blank, dated 1865.
