What Our Customers Say...

Description

Colour Plates, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding, Very Scarce

A very scarce edition of this classic work of English literature, first published in 1719.

Illustrated with eleven plates 'illustrated in oil colours' by Joseph Martin Kronheim a German-born lithographer and wood engraver.

Collated, lacking an illustrated title page.

A fictional autobiography of the title character, a castaway who spends years on a remote tropical island near Trinidad, encountering cannibals, captives and mutineers before being rescued. The novel was immediately well received, and is often credited as marking the beginnings of realistic fiction as a literary genre, and as a contender for the position of first English novel.

Defoe was a prolific and versatile writer, producing hundreds of works on diverse topics including politics, crime, religion, marriage and the supernatural, but is best remembered for this work.

Undated; dated 1864 via the British Library.
