First Edition, Publishers' Original Binding

The first edition of this work, second issue, with advertisements dated September 1864, rather than the August of the first issue.

The titular poem concerns the principle in law that after being missing for a certain number of years, a person could be declared dead for purposes of inheritance and remarriage. 

The work of Alfred Tennyson, 1st Baron Tennyson, who was Poet Laureate during much of Queen Victoria's reign.

With the inscription of Lucy Parkinson, Sep. 1864, to the front pastedown.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding. Bumping to back strip head and tail. Minor loss of cloth to back strip tail, with further loss to back strip head. Back strip and board perimeters age toned. Hinges strained, with front hinge firmly held, but rear hinge tender. Inscription to front pastedown. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages bright, with light spotting throughout.
