The Poetical Works of Johnson, Parnell, Gray, and Smollett, with Memoirs, Critical Dissertations, and Explanatory Notes by Rev. George Gilfillan, edited by Charles Cowden Clarke. During his lifetime Reverend George Gilfillan was an advocate for working-class poets, as well as being a spasmodic poet himself and a literary critic. Within this volume is contained several delightful poetical works by Samuel Johnson, Thomas Parnell, Thomas Gray, and Tobias Smollett, including Samuel Johnson's 'The Vanity of Human Wishes', Thomas Gray's 'Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard', and a number of Smollet's odes.

Condition

In full calf Bickers & Son binding with gilt decorations. Externally, generally attractive with the odd mark and slight bumping and rubbing; former to spine's head and tail and extremities, latter heaviest to the leather's fore edge and spine. Some rubbing to the front pastedown. Bickers & Son mark to verso of first front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound with lovely, bright, clean pages; light age toning and spotting exclusive to the endpapers. With fore edge marbling, slightly dulled at the top edge.
