French author and statesman Alphonse de Lamartine describes his travels in the Middle East and South Eastern Europe this leather bound copy of Voyage en Orient. Published in French. Needing to take a break from politics, Lemartine travelled to the Orient and recorded his impressions of Lebanon, Syria, Cyprus, Greece, Turkey, Bulgaria, and Serbia. Although Lamartine was formerly a monarchist, he came to embrace democratic ideals and oppose militaristic nationalism, eventually losing to Napoleon in the election of 1848.
