This pamphlet explores the manumission scheme of John McDonogh, in which he allowed his slaves to buy their freedom, in a process that took them around fifteen years.
McDonogh was a Louisiana-based entrepreneur who, as a slave owner, supported the American Colonization Society, which organized transportation for freed people of color to Liberia
Published in the 'Colonization Journal', in February 1862.
An interesting piece of Americana published during the Civil War.
Condition
Unbound as issued, with a reinforcement of cloth to the backstrip. Cloth is a little worn. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean. Institutional stamp to the title page, and a label and stamp to the verso of the final leaf. Closed tear to the tail of pages 1 to 12. Small chip to the head of pages 19 to 24, with no loss of text.
