This copy is undated. Dated here using Jisc, from copies held at the university of East Anglia library, National Trust Libraries and the Natural History Museum Library.

Illustrated with 16 plates, 14 of which are in colour including the frontispiece. Unfortunately, plate XIV is fully disbound, but present. Collated, complete.

This is a charming Victorian natural history book, covering every native species of British butterfly with descriptions of each butterfly’s development, structure, habits, and habitats, along with guidance on collecting and preserving specimens. Coleman, both an artist and naturalist, illustrated much of the work himself.

W. S. Coleman (1829–1904) was a Victorian artist and naturalist known for illustrating and writing accessible works on British wildlife.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, smart. slight rubbing and bumping to extremities. Slight fading to spine and extremities. The odd minor handling mark to boards. Front free endpaper removed. Slight chipping to head of spine. The odd spot to endpapers. Internally, somewhat loosely bound. Hinges strained and occasionally cracked with binding materials exposed, but holding. Pages 1-16 partially disbound. One unnumbered page fully disbound. Binding materials exposed at hinges of pages 48 and 49. Hinge between pages 176 and 177 particularly cracked, partially detaching from spine and in need to sympathetic repair.
