The first edition of this very scarce work. This copy is the issue with lithographs, another issue was published with hand-coloured plates.
A charming volume of plates of birds, striking drawn from nature by Jemima Blackburn. Illustrated with an engraved title, and twenty-two plates. Collated, complete.
The plates in this volume include depictions of the Solan Goose, Black Guillemot, Sandpipers, Fieldfare, Song Thrush, Heron, Willow Warbler, and more.
Blackburn was a Scottish painter, who is best known for this work, which was followed by a second, expanded edition, in 1868.
Condition
In a rebacked quarter cloth binding with paper to the boards. Externally, generally smart. Boards are rubbed, with loss to the extremities. Light age-toning and marks to the boards. Hinges have been reinforced. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned with scattered spots.
