First edition, reprinted from The Athenaeum. A collection of letters which chronicle the events leading to the Italian unification or Risorgimento, providing a first-hand account of the process and its impact on the people of Italy, specifically Tuscany and Florence. These twenty-seven letters are credited with having offered a key insight into the unfolding situation. With the author's firmly established place in the liberal and literary circles of Florentine society allowing her to capture the era's liberal sentiments while generating support for the Risorgimento in Britain. Written by Theodosia Trollope, an English poet, translator, and writer also known for her marriage into the Trollope family. After moving to Florence with her husband Thomas Adolphus Trollope, her hospitality made their home the centre of British society in the city. Her opinions and writings in support of the Italian nationalists are credited with changing public opinions. Previously held in the library of Hugh Lupus Grosvenor, 1st Duke of Westminster, an English landowner, politician and racehorse owner. Although he was an MP from the age of twenty-two, his main interests were not in politics, but in his estates, horse racing, and other country pursuits. He developed the stud at Eaton Hall and achieved success in racing his horses, who won the Derby on four occasions. Bound by Holloway.

Bound in full calf. Externally, smart with light rubbing to the extremities and the odd small mark to the boards. Minor fading to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. Bound by Holloway.
