Complete in two volumes. First edition. With a colour frontispiece to volume one and two hundred in-text images across the volumes. A detailed and comprehensive introduction into the study of monumental brasses, with reference to ecclesiastical costume, emblems and devices, and descriptions of brasses of the fourteenth, fifteenth, sixteenth, and seventeenth centuries. Including a list of the monumental brasses in the British Isles and a selection of their inscriptions. Written by Reverend Herbert Haines, a British clergyman and antiquary. Previously held in the library of Robert Offley Ashburton Crewe-Milnes, 1st Marquess of Crewe, a British Liberal politician, statesman, and writer.

Condition

In the original full brown cloth binding. Externally, sound with rubbing and light bumping to the extremities. Light fading to the spines with the odd small mark to the boards. Light loss to the cloth at the head and tail of the spines with the odd split in the cloth to the joints. Front hinge tender to volume two. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot. Minor age toning to the endpapers with the previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown.
