Five volumes. Being volumes LIII, LVI, LVIII, LXIII, and LXV of the Remains Historical and Literary Connected with the Palatine Counties of Lancaster and Chester published by The Chetham Society. Written by John Harland, an English reporter and antiquary. This set contains: Mamecestre: Being Chapters from the Early Recorded History of the Barony; the Lordship or Manor; the Vill, Borough, or Town, of Manchester, 1861-1862. Complete in three volumes. With a frontispiece to volume one. A detailed and comprehensive study into the early history of Manchester, with chapters on the Norman Conquest, thirteenth century law-making, knights' fees and service, surveying manors, town charters, and much more. A Volume of Court Leet Records of the Manor of Manchester in the Sixteenth Century, 1864. Alongside the Continuation of the Court Leet Records of the Manor of Manchester A.D. 1586-1602, 1865. Complete in two volumes. With a frontispiece to volume one. A record of the historical documents related to manorial courts of Manchester, with specific reference to the sixteenth century chronicles.

Condition

In the original full cloth binding. Externally, smart with light rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Fading to the spines and board edges with the odd small mark to the cloth. Splits in the cloth to the head and tail of volume four resulting in light fraying. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot or handling mark. Light age toning to the endpapers with a contemporary ink inscription to the front endpaper. Previous owner's bookplates to the front pastedown and front endpaper of volume two and three.
