This work is the account of the author's travels through the Middle East, following the Biblical footsteps across the desert for forty days, as the Israelites followed Moses leading them out of Egypt.
Illustrated with an engraved title page and frontispiece, twenty-four plates and one folding map. Collated, complete.
In a contemporary imitation walnut lacquered papier-mache binding. Now uncommon, these bindings were popular in the mid-Victorian era.

Written and illustrated by William Henry Bartlett. Bartlett was an illustrator who travelled extensively throughout the Middle East, Europe, America, and the Balkans. During his travels he authored works which he also illustrated. He is best known for his landscape illustrations, frequently rendered as steel engravings.
Condition
In morocco-backed, imitation walnut papier mache boards, with watered silk endpapers. Significant rubbing to back strip. Rear joint starting, with board tenderly held. Boards exceptionally bright. Front hinge strained prior to title page, and a touch tender. Internally, generally firmly bound, but with one plate detached and loosely inserted. Pages generally clean and bright, with spotting to first and last few leaves, and to pages facing plates.
