What Our Customers Say...

Description

The first edition of this very scarce work.

Complete with seven plates of printed photographs of The Raphael Cartoons. Collated complete.

In the publisher's original cloth binding.

The Raphael Cartoons are a set of seven full-scale designs painted by Raphael and were commissioned in by Pope Leo X for the Vatican's Sistine Chapel.

Considered one of the greatest treasures of the Renaissance, these works were unfortunately hidden in the gallery of Hampton Court, where author Richard Henry Smith studied.

The publication of these photographs therefore gave access to those who had never seen them, whilst offering insightful context and background behind each.

Condition

In the original cloth binding. Externally, very smart with slight rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with scattered spotting. Bookplate of one J. Berry White to the front pastedown.
