Description

Illustrated, Leather Binding, Rebound

Bound in half morocco with cloth boards.

These volumes are undated. Dated here using Jisc, from 17 copies held at various institutions including the University of Cambridge Libraries, University of Edinburgh Libraries and the University of Glasgow Library.

This is a complete two-volume set, offering an illustrated, encyclopedic survey of global religions and sects and their doctrines, rites, and customs, as they were understood in the mid-19th century. Both volumes are profusely illustrated with numerous plates of engraved illustrations.

Gardener uses a dictionary-style arrangement of religions and sects alphabetically, with volume I being A-G and Volume II H-Z. These volumes cover the major world religions: Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism, also covering Christian Sects & Denominations. These works also explore ancient religions: Egyptian, Greco-Roman, Norse, Persian (Zoroastrianism), Druidic, as well as lesser known faiths and sects.
