This collection was gifted to Henry Austin Dobson, an English poet and essayist, by author Thomas Gray, for assisting in editing his work, the 'Civil Service Geography'. With a contemporary inscription detailing this exchange to the front endpaper of 'Vanity Fair'. The inscription is followed by Austin Dobson's own, stating the collection to be handed to his son, Clement Dobson and signed by Austin to the bottom. Best known for his graceful and polished verse, Dobson was a leading figure in the late-Victorian literary scene, reviving forms that had fallen out of fashion and contributing to the broader aesthetic movement known as Aestheticism.
A selection of eighteen works from English novelist, illustrator William Makepeace Thackeray, best known for his satirical works such as 'Vanity Fair' and 'The Luck of Barry Lyndon'.
Comprising the first edition of 'Lovel the Widower', 'Roundabout Papers' and 'Denis Duval' and other various unstated later editions and impressions, unless stated otherwise.
All volumes have been uniformly rebound in a smart half crushed morocco, with decorative gilt to the spines and marbled endpapers.

Condition
Uniformly bound in half crushed morocco. Externally, smart, with light rubbing to the extremities and slight scuffing to the boards. Front hinge to 'Vanity Fair' has failed, with a bookplate with the initials 'A. D.' to its front pastedown otherwise firmly bound. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with scattered spotting to the first and last few leaves.
