A collection of works, containing: The poetical works of Joseph Addison, a British writer and politician usually remembered alongside his long-standing friend Richard Steele, with whom he founded The Spectator magazine. The fables of John Gay, an English poet and dramatist and member of the Scriblerus Club, who is best remembered for The Beggar's Opera (1728). The Chase, an early eighteenth century poem that serves as an exploration of hunting, blending art and sport while emphasizing the camaraderie and elegance of the chase. Written by William Somerville, an English poet who wrote in many genres. With memoirs of the authors and critical dissertations of each work from George Gilfillan, a Scottish author and poet who was one of the spasmodic poets. Gilfillan was also an editor and commentator.
Condition
Bound in full calf. Externally, smart with rubbing to the extremities and the odd small mark to the boards. Minor fading to the spine. Front hinge just starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot or handling mark. Light spotting to the first and last few pages with a contemporary ink inscription to the front endpaper.
