What Our Customers Say...
Description
An Important Work, First Edition, Original Binding, Publishers' Original Binding, Very Scarce
First UK edition. Very scarce. As the first published work from the author, collected from a series of her lectures, this piece concerns itself with the physical and mental development of women and girls. With specific reference to the preparation of young women for motherhood. As well as outlining Blackwell's own four general principles to understanding human physiology, the work emphasized the importance of social stability for girls and women in relation to the maintenance of their health. Written by Elizabeth Blackwell, an Anglo-American physician, notable as the first woman to earn a medical degree in the United States, and the first woman on the Medical Register of the General Medical Council for the United Kingdom. Blackwell played an important role in both the United States and the United Kingdom as a social reformer, and was a pioneer in promoting education for women in medicine. Her contributions remain celebrated with the Elizabeth Blackwell Medal, awarded annually to a woman who has made a significant contribution to the promotion of women in medicine. Previously held in the library of Titus Salt Junior, youngest son of the Yorkshire wool merchant and philanthropist Sir Titus Salt.
