Description

Illustrated, Original Binding, Signed Binding

A collection of poetry by popular American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, with 25 illustrations, collated and complete. An uncommon edition of Longfellow's popular collection, illustrated by John Gilbert, and engraved by the Dalziel brothers. Although Longfellow's popularity declined after his death, during his lifetime he was one of the most popular poets in the US. Known for their musicality, Longfellow's poems often present myths and legends, or address moral and cultural values. This collection opens with The Courtship of Miles Standish, a narrative poem that focusses on a love triangle between three passengers of the Mayflower, the boat English settlers travelled on to North America in 1620. Includes other poems such as Haunted Houses, The Jewish Cemetery at Newport, and Santa Filomena. With 25 illustrations drawn by John Gilbert, and engraved by the Dalziel brothers, collated and complete. Sticker to front pastedown from 'G.A. Poynder. Second Hand Book-shop in Reading'. Binders sticker to the rear pastedown. Bound by 'Bone & Son. 16 Fleet Street. London'.
