With an illustrated frontispiece, this historical fiction novel combines the legend of the broken cross with the Douglas family of Scotland, including an appendix on the Black Douglases, offering a more factual account of the families history. The Black Douglases were a powerful Scottish noble family, descended from "The Good" Sir James Douglas during the late Middle Ages. They were known for their military expertise and loyalty to the crown during the Wars of Scottish Independence.

In publisher's original binding. Externally, generally smart. Bumping to extremities, causing slight loss of cloth to head and tail of the spine. Marks to boards and fading to spine. Ink inscription to front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are clean and bright with occasional spotting and marking, most frequent to the front and rear of the volume.
