First published in the U.S. under the title 'The Americans in Japan: An Abridgement of the Government Narrative of the U.S. Expedition to Japan, Under Commodore Perry'.
Rebacked, with the original cloth for the boards and spine laid down.
A contemporary account of this significant expedition led by U.S. Navy officer Matthew C. Perry, who signed the Convention of Kanagawa - a treaty which effectively meant the end of Japan's 220-year-old policy of national seclusion by opening the ports of Shimoda and Hakodate to American vessels.
Illustrated with a frontispiece and numerous in-text engravings. With eight pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear.
Collated, complete.

Rebacked, with the original cloth for the boards and spine laid down. Externally, with fading and a few marks to the original cloth, otherwise very smart. Internally, pages 97-120 detached but present. Pages are generally bright and clean, with the occasional spot or handling mark.
