Idylls of the King traces the story of King Arthur's rule, from his first encounter with Guinevere and the quest for the Holy Grail to the adultery of his Queen. The cycle of twelve narrative poems are written in an elegiac style rather than epic in structure, often read as an allegory of the societal conflicts in mid-Victorian Britain.
Written in the middle of his career, Idylls is Tennyson's longest and most ambitious work, reflecting his lifelong interest in Arthurian themes.
A pleasing first impression from the celebrated Poet Laureate.
