The first edition of this work. Present here are volumes I and II of this work, published in 1859.
In 1867, a third volume was published, which is not present here.
A miscellaneous collection of the essays of John Stuart Mill, drawn principally from his contributions to the Edinburgh and Westminster Reviews.
The essays include discussion of Jeremy Bentham, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, proposed currency reforms, the enfranchisement and suffrage of women, democracy in America, and the French Revolution of 1848, among other subjects.
With the inscription of Isabella Saunders, 1870, to the title page heads.
With six pages of advertisements to the rear of volume I.
Condition
In the publisher's original cloth bindings. Externally, smart. Bumping to back strip head and tail, with a touch of fraying to cloth in these regions. Light fraying to front and rear joint of volume I. Joints strained, with boards firmly held. Volume I binding a touch tender to the centre, with volume II board firmly held. Pages clean and bright. Contemporary inscription to title page heads.
