The first edition of this physiological study from Victorian philosopher George Henry Lewes.

Complete in two volumes, both of which smartly bound in half calf with marble boards. 

Containing thought-provoking writings of the human body and mind, from the structure of blood, respiration, feeling and thinking, the mind and the brain and sleep and dreams. 

Whilst Lewes contributed significantly to his fields of speciality, he is now chiefly remembered for his long-term liaison with the novelist George Eliot (Mary Ann Evans) although the pair never married. 

Condition

In half calf binding with marbled boards. Externally, smart. Rubbing to the extremities, heaviest to the marbled boards and edges. Pages are generally bright and clean, with a few spots to the first and last few leaves. Owner's ink inscriptions to the front free endpapers.
