The scarce 1859-60 two volume 'Stereotype Edition' of this work, with volume II being an Appendix volume.
Flat signed by the author to the front pastedown of volume II: 'B. R. B [...] from his sincere friend John Gadsby'. Dated January 21, 1861.
Volume I illustrated with a folding colour map and numerous vignette illustrations, with a number of vignette illustrations to volume II. Collated, complete.
With former owner's inscriptions to the front blanks of volume I, with the inscription reading 'J.W. Mardon, with the kind regards and best wishes from your friend at Holloway', dated 1860.
First published in 1855, in his works John Gadsby discusses his travels in the East, providing details about his time in Egypt, Jerusalem, Cairo and Smyrna, alongside European travels in Thebes, Rome and Pompeii.
Condition
In half calf bindings, with cloth covered boards. Rubbing to back strip heads and tails. Front joint of volume I starting, with board very weakly held to head only. Rear joint of volume I strained but firmly held. Signed to front pastedown of volume II. Inscriptions to front blanks of volume I. Internally, firmly bound. Pages age toned due to paper type, but generally clean. Closed tear to folding map.
