The very scarce first edition of W. O'Brien's prize winning essay on the canals of England.
Illustrated with three folding plates. Collated, complete.
O'Brien discusses the 'rudiments of the art of canal engineering', the history of canals, the management of canals, and his own recommendations as to improvements in canal engineering and navigation.
Retaining the original half title.
With the former owner's inscription of Thos. Foster, dated 1865, to the title page head.
O'Brien, an engineer, was awarded £100 by the Canal Association as a prize for this essay.
Condition
In a half calf binding, with cloth covered boards. Externally, excellent, with rubbing to back strip head and head of front joint. Internally, firmly bound. Inscription to title page head. Pages lightly age toned, but generally clean, with the odd handling mark. Instances of marginal pencil notations, not affecting text.
