First Edition, Illustrated, Leather Binding

First Edition. With illustrations by John Leech: colour plates and black and white vignettes. Robert Smith Surtees (17 May 1805 – 16 March 1864) was an English editor, novelist and sporting writer. He was the second son of Anthony Surtees of Hamsterley Hall, a member of an old County Durham family.

Condition

In a half calf binding with mottled paper covered boards, gilt detailing to the spine, and mottled endpapers. Externally, sound with some rubbing, and a little bumping to the extremities. Internally, the binding is strained in places. The pages are generally bright but with some handling marks and scattered spotting, and light foxing to the endpapers. There is a paper bookplate to the front pastedown, with a coat of arms of Arma Armstrong.
