Edited by Howard Staunton, an English chess master who is generally regarded as the world's strongest player from 1843 to 1851, who later entered a parallel career as a Shakespearean scholar. He undertook this work with Routledge from 1847, and received positive criticism. Illustrated by Sir John Gilbert, an English artist, illustrator and engraver. With engravings by The Brothers Dalziel, a prolific wood-engraving business in Victorian London, founded in 1839 by George Dalziel.
