Complete in three volumes. Illustrated throughout with in-text and full-page engravings. The plays of William Shakespeare, an English playwright, poet and actor widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. Being his complete thirty-nine dramatic works, with volume one beginning with The Two Gentlemen of Verona, volume two with All's Well That Ends Well, and volume three with The Tempest. Edited by Howard Staunton, an English chess master who is generally regarded as the world's strongest player from 1843 to 1851, who later entered a parallel career as a Shakespearean scholar. He undertook this work with Routledge from 1847, and received positive criticism. Illustrated by Sir John Gilbert, an English artist, illustrator and engraver. With engravings by The Brothers Dalziel, a prolific wood-engraving business in Victorian London, founded in 1839 by George Dalziel.
Condition
In the original full calf binding. Externally, smart with light rubbing to the extremities and the off small mark to the boards. Very minor loss to the heads of the spines of volumes I and II. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot. Light spotting to the first and last few pages with further spotting to the endpapers. Age toning to the endpapers with a contemporary ink inscription to the front free endpaper. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown.
