The first edition of this historical novel from William Makepeace Thackery.
Complete in two volumes.
The first issue, with the following issue points: 'actresses' on page 207, line 33, Volume I; Chapters 47 and 48 are misnumbered as 48 and 49 in Volume I.
This work is illustrated by Thackery himself, with a number of vignette illustrations, twenty-two plates to volume I, twenty-two plates to volume II, and an illustrated title page to each volume. With further vignette illustrations.
Collated, complete.
Critical reception of the book was on the whole largely favourable, and the novel has continued to be considered a standard work of nineteenth century fiction, though many critics have held that the novel's plotting was not one of the works strong points.

Condition
In half calf bindings, with marbled paper covered boards. Gilt detailing to back strip. Volume I lacking volume number spine label. Significant rubbing to back strip head and tail, joints, and board perimeters. Front hinge of volume I and rear hinge of volume II strained, with boards firmly held. Bookplates to front pastedowns. Internally, firmly bound. Plates significantly age toned, with foxing to perimeters. Text leaves lightly age toned, with spotting and instances of foxing to page perimeters, most concentrated to those surrounding plates.
