This uncommon abridged edition on British seaweeds is compiled from Professor Harvey's Phycologia Britannica, a notable four-volume work first published between 1846 and 1851 and very scarce itself. 

In the publisher's green cloth binding, with blind-stamping and gilt. 

Describing various species pf British algae, grouped under the sub-classes Mesangiospermeae, Rhodospermeae and Chlorospermeae. 

William Henry Harvey was an Irish botanist and authority on algae and bryophytes (mosses), who described over 750 species across his career. His Phycologia Australica represents one of the most important books on phycology in the 19th century and, by the time Harvey set food in Western Australia, he had already established himself as a leading figure within the field. 

A charmingly owned and referenced copy, with neat contemporary annotations made to the margins throughout. With twelve additional leaves tipped-in, containing hand-written extracts from various relevant publications. With one additional leaf loosely inserted, containing a hand-written extract from Harvey's 'Phycologia Britannica'.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, smart, with a few damp stains to the front board. Rear hinge is starting, but firm. Small split to the tail of the backstrip. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are marginally age toned, with a few scattered spots. With neat contemporary annotations made to the margins throughout. With twelve additional leaves tipped-in, containing hand-written extracts from various relevant publications. With one additional leaf loosely inserted, containing a hand-written extract from Harvey's 'Phycologia Britannica'.
