1857 Ostrea; Or, the Lovers of the Oysters
What Our Customers Say...
Description
First Edition, Publishers' Original Binding, Very Scarce
A very scarce first edition.
Composed in mock-heroic verse, the poem anthropomorphises oysters, weaving a whimsical narrative that parodies epic poetry conventions.
This, combined with the pseudonym chosen, implies a parody of Percy Bysshe Shelley.
The poem opens with a grand invocation to the oyster, celebrating its origins and enduring presence in human culture. With elaborate and humorous language, it explores the imagined romantic entanglements of oysters, blending classical allusions with contemporary wit.
